Traveling up the Rio Dulce
We took a cruise this January and had a port stop at Santo Tomas de Castillo. From there, we took a small boat up the Rio Dulce to see how the people live along the river.
The people who live there use the river water for everything. It's even how they get from one place to the other. The children have their own little boats and take them to school. Our guide, Chico, told us about the country and the people. As we went slowly up and down the river the children tried to sell us things like fish and crabs.
We stopped at one of the houses where a woman showed us how to make tortillas. I even got to make one. I didn't eat it however just in case they used the river water to make the dough.
After the river tour, we stopped at the town of Livingston. We walked through the streets and stopped for a late lunch at a delightful little restaurant. We also tried some ice cream from a sidewalk vendor and some fresh pineapple. YUM!!!
It was a rainy day but it turned to be the best shore excursion of our entire cruise.
