Flying into Guatemala City then on to Flores/Tikal

If I am flying from the US and only transferring in La Aurora to a domestic flight to Flores, do I do Customs/Immigration at La Aurora or at my final destination? It is important that I find out before I book my tickets because there is only 62 minutes between my flights in La Aurora, and that would NOT be enough if I do Customs/Immigration! Taca and TAG only have 6:30 am flights and my Untied flight would arrive at 5:28 am. A bit worried...

Benjamin:

You would have to do immigration at La Aurora (GUA) before your flight to Flores, since GUA to Flores is a domestic flight.

I would get as much time as I could between flights or just arrive the night before - there are several hostels nearby the airport that have pickup. One is GuateFriends - here's the link. It's only about 5 minutes from the airport and has reasonable prices. Check out Guateliving for a review of Guatefriends.

If you decide to fly in that timeframe anyway, customs usually does not take that long, but if your flight from the US is delayed, that could, of course, cause a real problem.

Thanks for writing, and let me know how it goes on the Guatemala Airport Story page, if you get a chance. This kind of thing is what our readers would like to hear about.
