by Benjamin Barnett
(All-About-Guatemala.com)
This 112 pages book is jampacked with more than 120 colorful photographs that serve as an illustration of the rich celebrations in Mexico City, Mixquic, and towns of the state of Morelos. There are also descriptions of the festivity in Ocotepec which is a town located almost inside of the famous and beautiful city of Cuernavarca. This book has described most of the highlights during the day of the dead. It talks about the buying of the objects in the local markets that are needed in the rituals. It also has a chapter that describes how Mexicans prepare the special dishes to be places as an offering to the dead relatives.
What I enjoy most of the book is when it illustrates the rich rituals of building the altar. It shows the dramatic influence of the pre-Hispanic tradition in the beliefs and lives of the people. I was fascinated by the photographs that illustrate the colorful scenes during the festivity.
This book will entice you to personally experience the day of the dead in Mexico. You will be enthralled by how Mexicans show enthusiasm to this annual festivity. You will also realize how sincere they are as they honor their ancestors through the rituals. I highly recommend the day of the dead through the eyes of the soul as part of your collection especially for multicultural studies.
