This 48 pages book is jampacked with colorful and rich illustrations of the day of the dead holiday in Mexico. It also has a fun and easy to read descriptions that are intended for children. Tony Johnston, the author, did an amazing job because he has a come up with a children’s book that is not just fun but also informative. The photographs and illustrations by Jeanette Winter also helped a lot by catching the attention of the readers, especially the children.

What I enjoy most of this children’s book is that it showed how a Mexican family sincerely celebrates the annual holiday of the day of the dead. The author even included how everyone spends the day preparing special foods which are carried in a religious candlelight procession to the cemetery. The book also tells about the peaceful nightlong celebration of vigil with the singing, dancing, and feasting at the graves of the departed loved ones.

Day of the dead is a must-have for educational purposes. This book is small in size that makes it difficult to read in a large group of children. What makes this book more educational is that it also included a number of Spanish words and phrases that are simple enough for children to remember.
