This is an informative and helpful book for parents and teachers to read to a 4-8 years old child. The book has a woodblock-style of illustrations that makes it easy for readers to introduce the various aspects of the annual Mexican celebration of the days of the dead. Oftentimes, children don’t understand the different culture especially if they live in a foreign place. This book has carefully illustrated and presented the holiday to children and even to non-Latino youngsters. There are also illustrations of the Mexican art, rituals, and unfamiliar holidays that make this book more interesting.

This book is definitely for kids and you can use this as a bonding time with the children when you read to them something that is unfamiliar. Linda Lowery, the author, made an amazing job explaining the Days of the dead that is intended for children. Majority is familiar with Halloween and she has easily defined the link to this Mexican tradition. Barbara Knutson, the illustrator, also did a very good job presenting the colorful decorations. She made the ghoulish looking bones and skeletons appear interesting to kids rather than scaring them with the pictures.

The Day of the Dead (On my Own Holidays) is a perfect present for Latin parents who raised their children away from the Mexican culture. This will help them explain and illustrate the rich culture that the children should be familiar with.
