As Christmas time approaches in Guatemala, you will hear many popular Christmas carols in Spanish in schools, at the mall, and as you're driving or walking among the shops. Below you'll find the lyrics to I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day in Spanish (or Oí Campanas Repicar).
This is another famous Christmas song that has been recorded and sung by popular singers worldwide. This was inspired from a poem made by an American poet named Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The poem "Christmas Bells" was written in memory of Longfellow's wife who died in a tragic fire and his oldest son who was severely wounded during the battle in Virginia. The poem was so lovely that the English organist named John Baptiste Calkin used it with his own composition. Calkin's version is the most popular and has been sung by famous artists like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Jimmie Rodgers. Another version by Johnny Marks has also been made. Frank Sinatra, Sarah McLachlan, Harry Belafonte, The Carpenters and Bing Crosby are among the artists that recorded Mark's interpretation of the song. The most recent English recording can be heard from Richard Marx's Christmas album.
Oí campanas repicar
El día de la Navidad,
Su dulce canto pregonar
De paz y buena voluntad.
Sabía que el carillón
Cantaba el alegre son
Clamando a la cristiandad
La paz y buena voluntad.
Mas no podía hallar solaz,
Pues no veía yo la paz.
Había odio y maldad,
Sin paz ni buena voluntad.
El son llegó más fuerte ya:
"Dios vive y velando está.
Los justos prevalecerán
Con paz y buena voluntad".
El mundo se me transformó;
La noche en día se tornó.
Sublime son oí cantar
De paz y buena voluntad.
I heard the bells on Christmas day
Their old familiar carols play,
And wild and sweet the words repeat
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And thought how, as the day had come,
The belfries of all Christendom
Had rolled along the unbroken song
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
Till ringing, singing on its way
The world revolved from night to day,
A voice, a chime, a chant sublime
Of peace on earth, good will to men.
And in despair I bowed my head
"There is no peace on earth," I said,
"For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on earth, good will to men."
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep:
"God is not dead, nor doth He sleep;
The wrong shall fail, the right prevail
With peace on earth, good will to men."
