As Christmas time approaches in Guatemala, you will hear many popular Christmas carols in Spanish in schools, at the mall, and as you're driving or walking among the shops. Below you'll find the lyrics to Deck the Halls in Spanish (or Ya llegó la Navidad) and you can watch a video of Deck the Halls being sung in Spanish, as well.
This carol dates back to the sixteenth century and was found among the works of a Welsh harpist named John Parry Dall. Mozart was also said to have made piano and violin versions of the song during the eighteenth century. Widely played for both Christmas and New Year celebrations, the song has a catchy tune with an unforgettable refrain. The reason why the refrain says "fa-la-la" is because the song was first played on a harp. The Americans were the ones who provided lyrics to the song during the nineteenth century. During holiday celebrations, the repeated "fa-la-la" refrain is oftentimes played with a harp to give tribute to its original version. This was also intended as a dance song but was later opposed by the church; thus, it became a Christmas carol.
Ya llegó la Navidad
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Qué alegre se siente el alma
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Vamos todos a cantar
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Vamos todos a reír
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Apóstoles y magos vienen
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Adorar al tierno niño
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Vamos todos a cantar
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Vamos todos a reír
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Por doquiera llevaremos
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Mensaje de buenas nuevas
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Vamos todos a cantar
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Vamos todos a reír
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Deck the halls with boughs of holly,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Tis the season to be jolly,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Don we now our gay apparel,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Troll the ancient Yule tide carol,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
See the blazing Yule before us,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Strike the harp and join the chorus.
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Follow me in merry measure,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
While I tell of Yule tide treasure,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Fast away the old year passes,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Hail the new, ye lads and lasses,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Sing we joyous, all together,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
Heedless of the wind and weather,
Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
