This song is an excerpt from the story of the nativity wherein the shepherds outside of Bethlehem meet many angels singing gloriously to welcome Jesus. It is famously known for its chorus which includes the phrase "Gloria in Excelsis Deo". This means "Glory to God in the Highest".
Based on the French carol "Les Anges dans nos campagnes" or Angels in our countryside, the song has undergone many variations, including an English version way back in the 1860s. Almost anyone today is familiar with the lyrics that have grown popular over the years.
